  • The season opener at Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro saw Ayrton Senna start from pole in his Lotus‑Renault. Senna led early, but tire wear forced him to pit, allowing Nelson Piquet in the Williams‑Honda to take control.

Piquet dominated the remainder of the race, winning comfortably in front of the home crowd. Nigel Mansell retired with turbo failure, while Alain Prost finished second for McLaren, and Keke Rosberg took third in his debut for the team.

The result gave Piquet an early lead in the championship.
